Marco Fichera: l’eccellenza dello sport made in Sicily

There are those who proudly represent Sicily around the world through craftsmanship, traditions, but also through sports.
For this reason, Isola Bella chose to “meet” Marco Fichera, a young Sicilian fencer, silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Marco, born in Catania, wears jewelry that makes him feel close to his homeland even when he is traveling the world for his fencing commitments. Like the Trinacria, a symbol he is deeply connected to: “When I’m far away, I miss my family and all the good things typical of our culinary tradition. What I love about Sicily is the sea, the sun, and the warmth of the people: when I interact with athletes from other countries, I’m happy because everyone has an idea of a wonderful land, full of history and culture. Everyone loves to come to us, and it saddens me to see that some realities are not managed as they could be, and it annoys me when we sometimes have that attitude, that idea of being able to bypass the rules.

As a professional athlete, Marco has a clear concept of respect and discipline. “To a young person dreaming of an athletic career, I advise always believing in yourself, never giving up, and fighting with all your strength. Have a clear goal in mind, even if you might be afraid of some choices: you need to improve yourself in your own land, but also have the courage to leave and go win elsewhere to honor our Sicily.”

Relentless, Marco says: “I have finally recovered from an injury that kept me away from competitions: now I am ready to face the final part of the season and the Tokyo Olympics. In this historic moment, the desire to proudly represent Sicily and Italy is even greater: our country will rise again with the commitment of all of us, together.”
